What is urine microbiological analysis?

Urine microbiological analysis, also known as a urine culture, is a laboratory test that detects the presence of bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms in the urinary tract. Its main objective is to identify urinary tract infections and determine the causative agent, as well as its sensitivity to different antibiotics. Unlike a general urine test, this study focuses specifically on the culture of microorganisms, allowing for a more precise diagnosis and targeted treatment. It is a fundamental test both for patients with urinary symptoms and for those requiring medical monitoring due to recurrent infections or risk factors.

This test identifies pathogenic microorganisms present in the urine, mainly bacteria such as Escherichia coli, which is the most common cause of urinary infections, as well as other bacteria, fungi or yeasts.
