What are allergy tests?

Allergy tests are medical studies designed to identify substances (allergens) that trigger an immune system reaction in certain individuals. These reactions can present in different ways, such as respiratory, skin, digestive symptoms or even more severe reactions. These tests can detect allergies to foods, pollens, dust mites, animal dander, medications or other environmental agents. Thanks to these studies, it is possible to confirm the cause of symptoms and establish an appropriate treatment plan, including avoidance measures, medication or immunotherapy.

An allergy is an exaggerated response of the immune system to substances that are normally harmless, such as pollen or certain foods. When an allergic person comes into contact with these allergens, the body reacts by producing symptoms that can vary in intensity.
There are different methods to diagnose allergies, including skin tests (prick test), blood tests to measure IgE antibodies and, in some cases, controlled exposure tests. The choice of test depends on the suspected allergy and the patient’s profile.
Common symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, itching in the eyes or skin, skin rashes, breathing difficulties or digestive discomfort. In more severe cases, strong allergic reactions may occur and require immediate medical attention.
Skin tests involve applying small amounts of allergens to the skin to observe the reaction. Blood tests measure the immune response to specific substances. Both methods are safe and widely used.
Correctly identifying the responsible allergen allows avoidance of exposure, reduction of symptoms and significant improvement in quality of life. It also facilitates the use of specific treatments such as antihistamines or immunotherapy.
Results must be evaluated by a specialist, as a positive test does not always indicate a clinically significant allergy. Results must be correlated with the patient’s symptoms for an accurate diagnosis.

Manage your allergies and improve your wellbeing

Allergy testing is essential to understand the origin of many symptoms that affect daily life. From mild discomfort to more intense reactions, identifying the allergen allows effective measures to be taken to avoid it and control the body’s response. An accurate diagnosis enables personalised treatment, reducing the frequency and intensity of symptoms and improving long-term quality of life.

Identification of allergens

Helps detect the substances responsible for allergic reactions, whether environmental or food-related.

Improvement of symptoms

Understanding the cause of the allergy helps reduce symptoms such as sneezing, itching, congestion or skin rashes.

Personalised treatment

Allows the creation of a tailored treatment plan, including medication or immunotherapy depending on the case.

Prevention of severe reactions

Identifying allergens helps avoid exposures that could trigger more serious reactions.

Frequently Questions

An allergy involves an immune system response, while an intolerance is related to difficulty digesting certain foods and does not involve the immune system.
In some cases yes, especially avoiding antihistamines before skin tests, as they may affect the results. It is important to follow medical instructions.
No. Skin tests may cause slight, temporary discomfort or itching, but they are safe and well tolerated procedures.
