What is coagulation testing?

Coagulation testing is a set of laboratory tests that assess the blood’s ability to clot properly. This process is essential to prevent excessive bleeding after an injury, but it must also remain balanced to avoid the formation of abnormal clots (thrombosis). Through this analysis, different coagulation factors are evaluated, allowing the detection of abnormalities that may lead to bleeding, clot formation or related disorders. It is a fundamental test both in the assessment of symptomatic patients and in routine checks, preoperative evaluations or monitoring of anticoagulant treatments.

The most common tests include Prothrombin Time (PT), INR (International Normalised Ratio), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) and, in some cases, fibrinogen. These parameters assess different pathways of the coagulation process (extrinsic, intrinsic and common), providing a comprehensive view of the haemostatic system.
